‘Sir,’ said Felton to one of the scouts, ‘ride swiftly and bring word at once of whether they’re Spaniards, French or Burgundians. If Bertrand’s among them, ask for him by name and whether they’re looking for a battle.’

‘As you command,’ he replied, and thrust in his spurs and galloped off.

He came swiftly to meet our men, and raised his cap to hail them. The count of Denia saw him coming, and spurring his Aragonese steed he broke from his company and rode forward to meet him and said:

‘Who are you, sir?’

The scout replied: ‘William Felton and his brother John and the other lords have sent me to learn your name.’

‘I shan’t keep it from you,’ he said. ‘I’m the count of Denia in Aragon, and these companions of mine are Spaniards.’

‘Tell me, if you please,’ said the scout, ‘if lion-hearted Bertrand du Guesclin’s with you: don’t hide it.’

‘No, by Saint Simon,’ the count replied. ‘We’re Spaniards looking for a battle with the English!’

‘And you’ll have one soon enough!’ said the scout. ‘I’ll bring you William Felton!’
